Swire Shipping Fijian Drua development squad members Isikeli Basiyalo and Aisea Nawai, along with Apete Narogo from Semi Radradra’s Ubuntu team have been called into the national 7s setup.
Basiyalo, a 21-year-old forward was part of the Fijian Drua training camp when he received an unexpected call from head coach Glen Jackson on Monday.
He was informed that Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau wanted him in the squad.
Speaking to Fiji Rugby Basiyalo said, “When I was called, I didn’t believe it at first, but I was actually happy and keen. I’ve always wanted to try 7s, so I’m glad to be here and learning a lot.”
Kolinisau explained that the Drua players bring power and speed but emphasised that their inclusion in the 7s squad is not guaranteed.
“I’ve been in contact with Glen Jackson. He needed some boys to get game time. I told him it’s not a guarantee, we’ll have a look at them and see if they fit in,” Kolinisau said.
Narogo, 23 earned his call-up after being named the best player of the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s.
His standout performances caught the attention of the national selectors.
The three players will now compete for spots in the final squad as Fiji aims to make a strong impression in Hong Kong.
