Extra cane payment for manual cane harvesting farmers

7,786 sugar cane farmers who manually harvested their cane will get an extra $3 per ton of cane from government.

This was announced by the Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh today.

$2.1 million will be paid to the 7,786 farmers.

“This support aims to ease the financial burden of labour-intensive harvesting methods and challenges posed by rising labour costs,” he said.

“Our farmers are the backbone of Fiji’s sugar sector, and we are dedicated to ensuring they receive the necessary support to succeed.”

“These financial assistance programs reflect our ongoing commitment to sustaining livelihoods, boosting productivity, and securing a strong future for the sugarcane industry.”

723,877 tons of cane was harvested manually in 2024 season.
