There has been a pleasant progression in the preparation of amateur boxers for two international competitions this year, according to Fiji amateur boxing head coach Cam Todd.

Todd is overseeing preparations for both teams – an elite team for the 2025 USA Boxing International Open in Pueblo, Colorado and another team of other amateur boxers are preparing for the Australian Club Championships in Adelaide, Australia.

Young amateur boxers are preparing for competitions in the United States and Australia which take place this April and May respectively.

“They’re all in training and are in pretty good shape. Most of them are pretty close to their target weight now which is good,” Todd explained.

“So we’re training every day at the moment, getting ready for that.”

Training for the two events is unfolding with full force in various categories, as Todd highlighted the scope of activities currently in progress within the national teams.

“Our junior and youth athletes – they’re training with me for two to three days a week and also with their coaches because I think it’s important to still work with their coaches,” he highlighted.

“We’ll try and get about four of them in our March competitions so they can have some fights before they go overseas.”

As their preparations continue to unfold, he attributed financial challenges as an obstacle faced in putting together a national team for both competitions.

“Finance is the big one. We do get a lot of help from the (Fiji National) Sports Commission which is greatly appreciated but we still have to pay to fundraise to get extra costs,” Todd mentioned.

These costs needed to be catered to were luggage expenses incurred during travel to the American competition.

Meanwhile, there will be a car-wash fundraising event in aid of their financial expenses for the trip at Kundan Singh in Tamavua from 10am-2pm tomorrow.
