Under size mud crabs seized in the weekend – SUPPLIED

The Ministry of Fisheries seized 95 undersized mud crabs in the weekend and released them back into the sea.

Fiji Military Forces and Fiji Navy assisted in the operation that took place at various fish markets in the Central division.

Selling of undersized mud crabs is a breach of the Fisheries Act.

“The Ministry has been receiving complaints of the selling of undersized mud crabs thus the execution of the operation with the Fiji Navy,” stated the Ministry.

The Ministry of Fisheries seized 95 undersized mud crabs in the weekend and released them back into the sea.

“The Ministry has been receiving complaints of the selling of undersized mud crabs thus the execution of the operation with the Fiji Navy,” stated the Ministry.

“Triton and conch shells were also confiscated as they are also protected shells under the Fisheries Act Legislation.”

“Vendors selling under sized crabs have been cautioned by the Ministry to stop selling them as they need to grow and reach its maturity stage before they can be harvested.”

Crabs need to be 12.5cm or more in size before it be caught and sold.
