Six top teams, instead of seven, will be the new format of competition this season for the Fiji FA Women’s Super League.

This was outlined in a statement released by the Fiji Football Association.

Speaking to Fiji FA, the competitions manager Shaniya Shankar said the change was intended to enhance the level of competition and field a greater display of football for fans and supporters.

“The streamlined format ensures that only the most competitive teams participate, promising fans high-quality football throughout the season,” Shankar told Fiji FA Media.

Shankar explained the reduction would give way for fostering competitiveness and efficiency.

“This change aligns with Fiji FA’s vision to raise the standard of women’s football and prepare players for higher levels of competition, including regional and international tournaments,” Shankar said.

With the reduction in competing teams, districts are expected to place all hands on deck in ensuring they display an exceptional performance on the field.

The final six teams for the tournament are yet to be finalized, and doing so will mean the three lowest-ranked teams from last season such as Suva Women, Tailevu Naitasiri Women and Nadroga Women will engage in a round-robin playoff.

The result of the play-offs will determine which teams have a spot for this season’s Super League.

While the competition launches with a revised and reduced format, the BA Women FC side has qualified for the OFC Women’s Champions League in Tahiti in what the Fiji FA stated was an achievement that “underscores the progress of women’s football in Fiji”.
