Former Wallabies flyhalf Christian Leali’ifano is embarking on an exciting new journey, having signed with Rugby Football Club Los Angeles for the upcoming season.
The veteran player, known for his leadership and work under pressure, expressed gratitude and enthusiasm to this newspaper for the opportunity as the team prepares for their historic trial match against the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua this Friday at Churchill Park, Lautoka.
“I’m excited and really grateful for another opportunity to continue my career,” Leali’ifano shared.
“To do it at a place like Los Angeles with a young team in Major League Rugby is pretty special. I’m thankful for the opportunity and looking forward to it.”
The matchup against the Drua marks a significant moment for the Los Angeles team as they step into uncharted territory, testing themselves against one of the Pacific’s most formidable rugby sides.
“We’re excited to be here in Fiji for this history-making trial against an amazing Fijian Drua team,” Leali’ifano added.
“It’s going to be a really tough match on Friday, but we’re ready to give it our best and hopefully put on a good performance for everyone watching.”
With a roster of fresh talent still finding its rhythm, Leali’ifano explained the importance of preparation and mental toughness as they face the Drua.
“My advice to the team is to be ready for the physicality and flair that the Fijians are going to bring,” he said.
“They’re an exciting and strong group. Having played against them in the past, I know it’s going to be a challenging encounter.”
Despite the challenges, the seasoned flyhalf is optimistic about the team’s potential.
“We’re all new to this environment, getting used to our game and each other, but the energy is great, and I believe we’ll rise to the occasion,” he added.
Leali’ifano is also looking forward to teaming up with former Fiji 7s star Semi Kunatani, who has been a standout player for Los Angeles.
“Semi is fantastic,” he said.
“He was the player of the year for the club last season and plays a big role for us. We’ll lean on his experience, and I’m sure he’ll continue to inspire and guide the young guys.”
“We’re excited to be here and grateful for the opportunity to compete against a team like the Drua. It’s a privilege, and we hope to deliver a game that fans will enjoy,” Leali’ifano said with a smile.
The match kicks off at 3 pm and tickets are $10 for Southwest Golf and silver, waitui and timber stand and $5 for grass embankment.
