THE Employment Relations Act 2007 went through Parliament in 2006, says Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Agni Deo Singh.

When asked why the Government was considering conducting a nationwide public consultation review on the Employment Relations Act 2007 and Work Care Bill 2024 in Sigatoka this week, Mr Singh said the ERA 2007 had gone through two decades.

“The law actually has gone through over two decades now,” the Minister said.

“And any law needs to be reviewed from time to time, to make it relevant for the current needs.”

He said that was one of the main reasons for the review.

“And the second reason, of course, is that a number of unilateral changes were made to the laws, existing laws by the previous administration,” Mr Singh said.

“These were cited by the International Labor Organisation, is breaches to the fundamental ILO conventions that Fiji has been a signatory to so we need to correct those to make sure that we comply with the ILO conventions.”

At the same time, he said laws must be strengthened to see that the rights of workers and employers were equally protected.

“And that we are able to enhance productivity through workplace relations improvement.”

The nationwide public consultation began in the Western Division on Monday this week, and is presently being conducted in Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki.

Consultations will move to Nausori tomorrow.

And on Friday, the consultations will be conducted in Navua and Suva.
