PARENTS in their zeal for educating children in Fiji are known to use extreme methods, says Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran.

Her comments come in the wake of a recent video circulating on social media depicting an incident of violence against very young children.

Ms Kiran said her ministry’s Director Children was looking into the matter with the help of law enforcement agencies.

“Unfortunately this type of parenting is very common in Fiji,” she said.

Trauma arising out of such methods, Ms Kiran said, could have detrimental effect on children and their learning.

“Alarmingly, recent statistics show that approximately 72 per cent of children in Fiji have experienced some form of violence in their lives. This includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, with many of these cases occurring within the confines of homes, schools, and communities – spaces that should be sanctuaries of safety and trust.”

Ms Kiran said the ministry was looking at mounting education and awareness on good parenting as well as what constituted violence against children and how to prevent these from happening.

“Every child in Fiji has the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear or harm.

“We urge all Fijians to act responsibly when sharing sensitive content on social media.

“I call on families, community leaders, educators, and all citizens to join hands with the ministry in creating a safer Fiji for our children.”
