Profound gratitude and happiness flooded Esther Kuva’s mind when she walked up to receive the dux award for Nakasi High School last month.

A young lady who overcomes adversity to be a beacon of hope for her family and friends, shares that it was through God’s guidance that she was able to achieve the top academic award at the school.

Kuva who lost her mum last year to bone cancer, used that difficult situation in her life to fight for a good future for herself and her siblings.

“My mum sadly passed away last year after being diagnosed with bone cancer just before my Year 12 examination, so starting this year without her has been quite challenging,” she said.

“There has been a lot of obstacles but I’m thankful that I’m still standing here. I’m grateful and thankful to God, without him I wouldn’t be achieving this.”

She thanked her family for their incredible support.

“I would like to thank my family. Special thanks to my aunt and uncle who accepted us during those hard times – they took us in.

“I’m thankful that my grandmother (maternal) is here today. I’m thankful for her – for the role she plays in my life even though my mum is not here, my grandmother is here representing her.”

Kuva during the school’s prize-giving ceremony walked away with the Year 13 prize, the leadership award, the Year 13 distinction award, the principal award, the best science student award, subject awards for English, Pure Mathematics, Biology, Physics and the dux award.

She said she didn’t expect to get all those awards during her final day at school.

“When my name was called, I was shocked, but I guess it’s all in God’s plan.”

Juggling schoolwork and being a head girl wasn’t easy for her, but it was through discipline and sacrifice that she managed to balance schoolwork and her leadership role.

She hopes to go into the medical field after university.

“I’m a science student, so most probably I will go into the medical field but I’m still deciding to do my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or to be a dentist.”

She hopes that one day she can help people.
