The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will be appealing the sentence passed against a businessman and two police officers.
The Suva Magistrate Court convicted businessman Bharat Jogia and two police officers, Corporal Samuela Dakuitoga and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Iferemi Savou and sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
However, Magistrate Jeremaia Savou suspended the sentence for two years.
Mr Jogia and Mr Dakuitoga were found guilty of one Count each of Bribery while Mr Savou was found guilty of one Count of Abuse of Office.
The court considered the character references of the convicted individuals and mitigating factors, such as their service to the community,
Mr Jogia and Mr Dakuitoga were each fined $1,000 to be paid by January 13, 2025.
The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) said in a statement will be appealing the sentence.
