THE Yasawa Saints made history yesterday by clinching the title at the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship, defeating Umina Bunnies 16-12 in an exciting final at Churchill Park, Lautoka on Saturday.
The Umina Bunnies, the only overseas team, traveled from northern Sydney to compete in the two-day tournament, which focused exclusively on women’s league tag.
The event brought together four teams: Yasawa Saints, Nadi Eels, VT Bears, and the overseas-based Umina Bunnies. It marked a significant milestone for women’s participation in the sport, with Yasawa Saints emerging as the first champions of this groundbreaking initiative.
Jone Wesele, Muaira State Development Officer, mentioned the importance of the tournament in promoting gender inclusivity in sports.
“Many times, sports events only involve men, so this programme is designed to empower women and encourage their participation in the sport,” Wesele said.
“It motivates women to step forward and be involved.”
“With its focus on empowering women and fostering international connections, the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship has set a strong foundation for the growth of women’s rugby league in Fiji.”
