The launch of the hydrogen dual-fuel generator demonstration project in Lautoka will strengthen the private sector partnership between Fiji and Japan, says Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii.

The project is a partnership between Fiji Gas, Obayashi Corporation and New Zealand-based company Halcyon under which renewable energy sources will be harnessed to generate power to meet the region’s growing energy demand.

Mr Michii said the project would also minimise greenhouse gas emission and preserve the environment.

He said Fiji would not only gain access to green hydrogen energy but it would be able to access clean energy source using this new technology.

“We are sort of promoting this private sector partnership in addressing national energy priorities,” Mr Michii said.

He said the project enabled Pacific island countries to understand the core of the 2050 strategy for the Blue Pacific continent.

“We have been talking about this clean energy or renewable energy and that is the agenda for any country, especially so in Pacific island countries and in Fiji,” he said, noting the project was a tangible result of those efforts.

“I’m pleased this new initiative is aligned to Fiji’s new national development plan and low emission development strategy.”

He said Japan was also pushing to implement a clean energy strategy.
