A call has been made to the Government and child protection services to strengthen child protection laws in Fiji.

Anare Tawake, who was chief guest at the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Day and World Children’s Day celebration at Nasova last week, said the establishment of child protection laws in Fiji has allowed a more coordinated and proactive response to child abuse in communities.

“Bill on rights, right to education, children’s rights, these I think may open the door to child protection in Fiji,” Mr Tawake said.

“Collaboration between law enforcement, child protection professionals, NGOs lead to quick response to child abuse cases.”

Mr Tawake said technology has also played a vital role in child protection.

“It provides a strong tool to protect children.

“International cooperation in tracking and preventing online exploitation have also allowed us to reach and assist children in ways we never thought possible.

“I suggest that all children, parents, colleagues and friends, as tireless, resilient advocates of child protection, let you be the one now to fight against child abuse.”
