The selection process for a new Commissioner of Police is in progress.

Prime Minister and Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) chair, Sitiveni Rabuka, confirmed a selection committed has been put together by the COC to sift through the 29 applications for the COMPOL.

He said the COC will meet again on December 16 to review the shortlisted applicant.

“The next COC regular meeting is Thursday of the third week every month, which is the 16th of December.”

Under Section 129(4) of the Constitution, the Commissioner of Police is appointed by the President on the advice of the COC, following consultation with the minister responsible for the Fiji Police Force.

According to earlier reports, high-ranking officers that have declared their interest in the vacant role include former Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Rusiate Tudravu, acting COMPOL Juki Fong Chew, and UN assistant secretary general Unaisi Vuniwaqa.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai, had also highlighted the need to urgently expedite the appointment of the new COMPOL as it is imperative for maintaining continuity, coherence, and morale within the Fiji Police Force.
