Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, told those present at the Annual Delegates Conference in Nadi yesterday, the event was an important one for their preparations towards the 2026 general elections.

“The Fijian people continue to endure a deficit of good governance despite the promise for change,” Mr Chaudhry said.

“As we look forward to 2026, this gathering is an important one as we plan for what will be a very pivotal election.

“The Coalition did oust the FijiFirst government, however, they have replaced it with their own brand of nepotism, cronyism, incompetence and self-fulfilment.

“Many of those in high positions are not there on merit – the controversial appointment of the president is a case in point.”

Mr Chaudhry said the Government had failed to deliver on the promises made in the lead-up to the 2022 General Election.

“Such as, reducing the cost of living, slashing ministers’ salaries, decreasing taxes, guaranteeing an independent legal system and ‘separation of powers’, improving health care, investing in housing, investing in climate change mitigation and infrastructure, reorganising FRA into the former PWD, provide access to reliable supply of drinking water for all, curb government debt, tackle-out migration, prioritise the sugar industry, develop agriculture, hold Sugarcane Growers Council and local municipal elections, reduce government wastage, increase trust in the police, foster social unity and combat drugs and domestic violence, address corruption, ensure transparency and accountability in governance and lessen poverty.

He said there was a lot of talk but very “little action”.
