The Suva City Council (SCC) is set to enhance its waste management strategies by introducing waste sorting as part of its solid waste master plan.

This initiative was announced by SCC chair Tevita Boseiwaqa, who said the council was committed to sustainability and waste minimisation.

“We also have an existing solid waste master plan,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.

“The council plans to reactivate and implement this framework.

“So in that master plan, there are some waste minimisation, sustainable practices that’s in there and excitingly it involves education awareness in schools.”

Mr Boseiwaqa said those sustainable practices were aimed at reducing waste sent to landfills.

He said the council also aimed to establish recycling centres where residents could drop off recyclables.

“We’re trying to work closely with the recycle companies.

“There are some prominent ones that are there now. And see how best we can set up these recycle centres.

“They used to be there. I think after COVID, things just came to a halt but we’re trying to revive that.”

Additionally, the council has begun collecting market vegetable waste, currently gathering about one tonne for composting at a facility in Samabula.

“So they are doing market waste composting.

“The main aim is to reduce the waste that is going to the landfill.”

While acknowledging that these changes will take time, Mr Boseiwaqa expressed confidence that implementing sustainable waste management practices will benefit the community in the long run.
