The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) and Tourism Fiji have signed a three-year partnership aimed at advocating sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship across Fiji.
This landmark partnership marks PRF’s first long-term collaboration since its strategic planning in March 2024 and highlights the importance of recycling and sustainability initiatives for Fiji’s tourism sector and local communities.
The partnership will see the implementation of key programs designed to improve waste management and advocate for recycling.
PRF founder Amitesh Deo said together, PRF and Tourism Fiji were committed to creating a cleaner, greener Fiji while engaging both Fijians and visitors in sustainable practices that align with sustainability goals and the vision of the Blue Pacific.
He said the I-Recycle Program will be a cornerstone of this partnership, with PRF and Tourism Fiji working together to implement the program in major tourist hotspots.
“The program is designed to enhance recycling efforts in popular tourist destinations, addressing litter issues and creating a cleaner environment for both visitors and local communities,” Mr Deo said.
“Through campaigns and advocacy, the partnership will raise awareness of recycling and environmental sustainability on key dates such as Global Recycling Day, World Environment Day, and World Oceans Day. Campaigns will focus on encouraging behavioural changes toward recycling and environmental protection.”
He said the partnership will also see the implementation of a Visitor Carbon Footprint Program which will engage tourists in sustainable practices by encouraging them to offset their carbon footprint during their stay in Fiji.
“Visitors will be able to participate in recycling efforts while being educated on the environmental impacts of their actions.”
He described this partnership as a significant milestone for PRF.
“By joining forces with a key industry partner like Tourism Fiji, we aim to build a circular economy and foster environmental stewardship.
“This partnership reflects the growing recognition that sustainability is vital for the future of both our economy and our environment.”
Tourism Fiji chief operations officer Leigh Howard said they were proud to partner with Pacific Recycling Foundation on this important journey towards a sustainable Fiji.
“As tourism plays a vital role in our country, it is essential that we lead the way in integrating sustainability into every aspect of the visitor experience,” Mr Howard said.
“This collaboration will not only enhance waste management practices but will also encourage tourists to be more mindful of their environmental impact, helping Fiji remain a world-class destination with a strong commitment to environmental conservation and responsible travel.”
