Tourism icon Shaw passes on

Geoffrey Shaw, former owner of Castaway Island, Fiji and director of Tokoriki Island Resort has passed away.

In a tribute to Mr Shaw in its Facebook page, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort – which Mr Shaw co-owned until he sold his shares in 2014 – said Mr Shaw “very gently passed away on the morning of Sunday 22nd September 2024.”

“A gentleman and pioneer, whom Fiji will forever be indebted, and for whom will be forever held in the heart of his beloved Outrigger Fiji,” it stated.

“From your Outrigger Fiji vuvale, we pass our sincere condolences to Mr Shaw’s family at this time and may he forever rest in peace.”

A leading advocate of environmental sustainability in tourism development, Mr Shaw was chairman of the Mamanuca Environment Society from 2004 until his passing.

Castaway Island, now owned and operated by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, was a founding member of the Society.

In 2022, Mr Shaw was appointed to the board of directors of Tokoriki Island resort by its owners Andrew Turnbull & family.

“Geoffrey has a wealth of knowledge of the Fiji tourism sector with over 50 years of experience in the industry,” the Turnbull family stated in their announcement.

“He purchased the iconic Castaway Island in 1992, built and opened Outrigger on the Coral Coast in 2000 and was actively involved in all aspects of management, marketing & strategic decision making for the two resorts whilst employing a team of over 800.

“In 2014, Shaw sold both resorts totalling 320 rooms to Outrigger Hotels Hawaii.”

Mr Shaw also served as deputy chairman of Tourism Fiji and chairman of Airports Fiji Ltd.
