Flying Fijians debutant Ponipate Loganimasi scored two tries that helped the side win over Japan by 41-17, to claim the Pacific Nations Cup title on Saturday.
Loganimasi came off the bench in the second half, placing a try in the 59th minute that extended Fiji’s lead at 18-10.
A further try by the debutant in the 74th minute and a successful conversion by Isaiah Armstrong Ravula was the icing on the cake, as they went on to win the championship.
Loganimasi was named in the team’s lineup as a replacement for Selestino Ravutaumada, who is still recovering from surgery.
Team coach Mick Byrne praised his performance in the match, and shared that his inclusion was an opportunity to prove himself.
“Ponipate (Loganimasi) was there, and an opportunity came, ironically, through Selestino’s injury.”
“He’s had a great debut and we’re looking forward to the career that’s in front of him,” Byrne said in a post match press conference.
The coach highlighted that Iosefo Masi had suggested for Loganimasi to substitute Ravutaumada and thus, was named in the team.
When coach Byrne was asked if Loganimasi’s build was too small according to his standards, he said it wasn’t.
“I think he has a great size and as a young player, he’s got a great frame to work on and he’s got a big future in front of him,” Byrne said.
