Rainfall over past days has brought relief at major raw water sources for the Suva Nausori system but with it an increase in turbidity levels.

Responding to queries on the update on water levels at treatment systems along the Navua to Nausori corridor, Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) said the increase in turbidity in the  Waimanu River mostly affected production levels at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant.

“During continuous rains, the increase in turbidity in the raw water impacts water production, reservoir levels, flows, and pressures to mostly our elevated and far-end customers,” WAF said in a statement.

“Current operation trends show that it takes two to three days for system recovery after a big rainfall.”

To improve the situation, WAF was implementing a project to interconnect the Viria Water Treatment system to the Tamavua system.

“WAF also has in place investment plans that will see further improvements in the service delivery during high rainfall periods in the next two to three years by upgrading of the water treatment plant and treatment capacity in the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant.”
