It is vital for both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force to have stable leadership for the security of the country.
Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai said it was important for the people of Fiji to feel that both these positions were secure.
“This allows them to have a lot of security and takes away all that insecurity and uncertainty, not just for the public but even more so for organisations such as the Fiji Police Force,” he said.
“It is important for them to have a Commissioner of Police in place.”
When asked whether he would prefer to see a local or expat in that role, Ro Kalouniwai said the main requirement was for the new commissioner to do the job.
He also said that in the past, there were military personnel who had headed the police force, and while this had worked to some extent, he felt it was time for a change.
“They should have somebody that is well deserving within the police force to take that lead.”
Ro Kalouniwai was also asked whether the decision to appoint Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner was not correct.
“I wouldn’t say that. You really have to look at the circumstances at that particular time. Was there someone else available or not?
“I don’t know. The leaders at that time, what was the reason, what were the requirements for having him there.”
