Digicel Fiji Bula Boys faced a tough challenge against Hong Kong-China in the final of the FIFA International “A” Friendlies Tri-Nations Series at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.

Despite a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the final, Hong Kong emerged victorious in the series due to goal difference.

The Bula Boys showed promise in the first half, with Dave Radrigai scoring a remarkable diving header in the 18th minute to give Fiji a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The team displayed strength and determination, but Hong Kong managed to equalise in the final minutes of the match.

Fiji Head coach Rob Sherman expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, considering it one of their best showings to date.

He acknowledged the need to maintain focus throughout the full 90 minutes and address lapses in concentration that led to conceding a soft goal.

Despite not dominating the game, Sherman believed the Bula Boys were the stronger team for most of the match and emphasised the importance of building on their progress for future games.

“I was pleased with the boys, very pleased, I think this is one of our best performances so far,” said Sherman.

“We didn’t quite maintain it to the full 90 and a bit of a soft goal, but we created a lot of chances.

“I wouldn’t say we dominated but we were the stronger team I felt, I would say we were winning almost three quarter of the game.

“There was little soft goal and a little lapse in concentration, ultimately, I think we can make a forward movement, So, we will work on this.

Captain Roy Krishna lamented the unlucky result but praised the team’s efforts against a formidable opponent.

Krishna emphasised the need for the players to stay focused and take care of themselves to continue moving in the right direction.

Looking ahead to their match against the Solomon Islands in October, the Bula Boys will aim to learn from this experience and come back stronger.
