THE Digicel Fiji Young Kulas are just a day away from embarking on a historic journey as they gear up to compete in their inaugural match at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

After a dedicated period of extensive training, the team is poised to face the formidable Brazilian team in their debut match.

According to Fiji Football chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf, the team commenced their rigorous training sessions locally in late July, ensuring that the players had ample time to prepare for this momentous occasion.

“We had started our preparation and training sessions locally high-performance training in late July, the girls have had a lot of time to prepare and now it’s just showdown,” said Yusuf.

“The team also underwent a ten-day training program in San Francisco, where they engaged in matches against the U20 girls of Costa Rica and Morocco, which was a great preparation for the team.”

Yusuf affirms that the players have been really prepared physically, mentally, and spiritually for the challenges that lie ahead.

“It will be a tough match I can say but I think the girls will do Fiji proud in showcasing their talent.”

The team’s lineup includes three players from the US, all of whom are anticipated to play in the upcoming match, alongside the talented 15-year-old goalkeeper Aliana Vakaloloma, who displayed exceptional performance in previous matches against Costa Rica and Morocco.

Fiji will play Brazil in their first World Cup match tomorrow at 11am before meeting Canada at 1pm next Wednesday.
