The Methodist Church of Fiji’s call to limit excessive kava use and restrict ministers from smoking cigarettes has received the support of dignitaries, including the Turaga na Tui Suva Ratu Sanaila Madanavosa.

Ratu Sanaila, who was also part of the Suvavou division’s delegates, said the change would play a significant role in determining the future of the country.

“I support the president’s call because if we want Fiji to thrive, it has to start with us, men,” he said.

“Men! You have to spend less time on drinking yaqona and look after your family because you’re the head of the family.

“What we do reflects on our children because they are an excellent imitators.

“For me personally, I only have two to three bowls, and that’s it. I have to think about the next day because it’s another day to be productive.

“Some people tend to do the opposite; they drink from dusk till dawn and sleep throughout the day, and the cycle repeats.

“I need to emphasise this because if we want Fiji and its people to thrive, we have to limit the excessive intake of kava.”

Ministers and dignitaries from various divisions have expressed their support for president Semisi Turagavou’s call.

Superintendent for the Rotuma Methodist Division, the Rev Viliame Fatiaki, said it was important the ministers uphold their roles and responsibilities as well as their standard of service.

“The MCIF has believed that free will was given to men to decide, and that’s why we don’t enforce regulations and laws. It all depends on our judgment, good judgment, but it has to start with us leaders and set an example for the members.

“Some of the discussion has been passed, and it will pave the way for young ministers to come to abide in what has been discussed to restore the lost image of Christ within the Methodist Church of Fiji.”
