Close to 100 school students around Nadi have been found to be offering themselves for sex on the dark web app known as Telegram, said Ministry of Education Divisional Counsellor West, Alice Fong.
She revealed this while speaking at the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Women’s Conference in Lautoka on Saturday.
Ms Fong recalled visiting a school in Nadi last month and was handed a file that was compiled by the Nadi Police Station.
“There is a social media app now called Telegram, if you’re aware, it’s a dark website where girls or boys put up their pictures and little videos engaged in sex and asking if you want to have a good time like this,” Ms Fong said.
“They say ‘buy me $100 recharge card, buy my phone, I need a hotel room’.
“The youngest child that I saw was a primary school student who was offering herself.
“This is in Nadi alone and when the police had gathered all the reports, there were 100 active students in the Nadi District.
Ms Fong said students in other districts in Fiji could be on this app.
“So don’t say ‘oh, this is only Nadi or Lautoka’. It’s happening with us now and I am speaking about this because of what I’ve seen, what I’ve read and what I know.
“Please make sure you watch over your children and know what they are doing.”
