Fiji now has more mobile phones than its total population.
According to statistics gathered from telecommunication companies, 1.31 million mobile phones were in the country last year.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru said this may mean people owned two to three phones.
“Our population has not reached the one million mark,” the minister said.
People living below the poverty line also owned phones, he said, adding that youths represented the largest demographic of users and developers shaping digital trends on a global scale.
“It is imperative to recognise that youths remain an essential demographic group in harnessing the transformative power of technologies to address global challenges.”
He said this underscored the immense potential of youths in leveraging digital pathways for sustainable development and creating a brighter future for generations to come.
