An overseas-based player has been named in Cricket Fiji’s team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Sub-Regional Qualifier A next week.
New Zealand-based Anish Shar is among the 14 men chosen to represent Fiji in its quest to make the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The team was announced last weekend following the completion of the inaugural Super 8 tournament with the players immediately marching into training on Monday.
“Our squad comprises of 13 local players, and one based in New Zealand. Anish Shar will join the team in Samoa from Auckland,” Cricket Fiji chief executive officer Sitiveni Rokoro said.
The team boasts a good mixture of promising young talents and experienced players.
“A few members of the team are under-19 players that featured in last year’s U19 world cup. So, they have proven and forced their way into the men’s squad. This is one of the best-prepared teams compared with the one in previous years because they underwent a July trial and then the Super 8 tournament last week,” Rokoro said.
The team has been training at Albert Park in Suva and will depart our shores on August 15.
Fiji is up against the Cook Islands and hosts Samoa and Vanuatu as competition will run from August 17-24 in Apia, Samoa.
The winner from Qualifier A will go on to face the victor from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup EAP Sub-Regional Qualifier B which comprises Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, and South Korea.
The overall winner will then proceed to the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
