The sale of pseudoephedrine is controlled in Fiji, according to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

The clarification comes after Drug Free World Fiji founder Kalesi Volatabu called for better monitoring of the sale and distribution of pseudoephedrine, a precursor to methamphetamine, was easily available to consumers even without a prescription.

The Ministry said pseudoephedrine was moved from an over-the-counter medicine to Prescription medicine in 2021.

“Claims that Government through the Ministry of Health & Medical Services does not have a registry and no monitoring process of what pharmacists import into the country or sell over the counter is misleading.”

Pseudoephedrine is also a permit item, requiring a permit issued by the Fiji Medicines Regulatory Authority.
