Head coach Osea Kolinisau wants the name Fiji 7s to be synonymous with the Olympic Games.
This is the legacy set eight years ago in Rio, Brazil and Kolinisau wants to see to it that it becomes something generational and exclusive only to Fiji.
It is a huge mountain to climb but the 2020 team proved in Tokyo, Japan that it is attainable and now the onus is on the 2024 team to maintain and uphold that legacy.
“Success here is defending our legacy; we’ve got a tough legacy to live up to,” Kolinisau stated.
“The 2016 boys set it, the 2020 boys maintained it and it’s a hard road to follow but the boys know what’s on the line.”
Keeping that golden legacy is not just for themselves but for the younger rugby sevens players that will don the white jumper in the years to come.
“We plan to try and keep that legacy going so that we can show our future generation that legacy is achievable, it’s possible and certainly we want everybody when they speak about Olympic 7s, is to talk about Fiji 7s.
“It’s good to have Fiji’s name there and we can claim it solely so when they say first gold medal, Fiji’s name comes up, gold in Japan, again Fiji’s name is there, and it will be good to say gold medal in
Paris and it’s still Fiji. It’s a legacy that’s been built and a legacy that we want to protect and keep going,” he added.
The Fiji 7s team will begin its quest tomorrow morning at 3 against Uruguay at Stade de France Stadium.
