Kava barrels and their impact on villages has been brought to the forefront of the Bua Provincial Council meeting last week.
Divisional police commander Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka told the council that kava barrel was a new form of fundraiser in villages and communities across Fiji.
“It’s usually done in Viti Levu,” he said.
“I was surprised to see that Vanua Levu was also doing it upon my return from serving for years in Nausori.”
He said one would wonder where the money for fundraising was coming from.
“Kava barrels are being held every week in communities and villages. We have to ask ourselves where the money is coming from.”
He said new practices usually brought trouble.
“We are bringing the town closer to villages and communities in rural areas and then there are usually dancing, and loud music being played during the event.”
He said village heads and elders needed to relook at the fundraising initiatives.
“We need to go back to our form of old practices of fundraising in villages and communities.”
