Father of taxi debate

CONCERNS were raised over the position of having father of taxis in Labasa.

At the Labasa Taxi Union annual general meeting yesterday, member Mohammed Imtiaz asked why the need to have such positions.

“Having the executive committee is enough because they are doing a good job,” he said.

“What is the use of having that position because we don’t need it. Just let the committee do their job and they are doing fine.”

The question raised a debate at the meeting with members expressing their views.

Union president Mahendra Singh said the position was for the older members.

“It’s a sign of our respect to them and we have had this position since this union started,” he said.

“It’s just one way of valuing the involvement of our older members and showing them that we respect their presence. There have been other older members who have been given these special positions and we have had them as our guide and adviser.”

But Mr Imtiaz said although they respected the older members, having such positions didn’t make a difference.

Fiji Taxi Association general secretary Rishi Ram, who was chief guest at the meeting, clarified that such positions were part of the association’s constitution.
