Three families are homeless after a fire destroyed their houses at Veiquwawa Settlement on Gaji Rd, Suva yesterday.

The fire started in the morning and quickly spread, engulfing the flat where the families lived. Despite the efforts of the firefighters, the flames destroyed the corrugated iron building.

Witnesses reported seeing thick smoke and flames coming from the flat, and neighbours rushed to help before emergency services arrived. Fortunately, all the residents managed to escape without injury, but they lost their homes and most of their belongings.

Distraught landlord Shalini Priya said she was away when her husband called to tell her about the fire.

“I don’t know what to do. We lost everything, this is our only home,” Ms Priya said.

The 10 people who live in the three flats were not able to save any of their belongings.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, but initial reports suggest it may have started in the kitchen of one of the flats.
