Government’s efforts to turn cannabis into medicine is a step closer to becoming a reality.

Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica confirmed that Cabinet had reviewed the feasibility study findings and was poised to advance the legislative process for approval.

He said there was widespread support garnered during consultations preceding the feasibility study, emphasising the industry’s significant economic prospects.

“So, the feasibility study is done,” Mr Kamikamica said.

“And it looks quite good. So, we’re going to progress with the legislation.”

Mr Kamikamica said medicinal cannabis had the potential to generate substantial income for Fiji, potentially becoming a lucrative sector for investment.

However, he stressed the importance of ensuring robust regulatory frameworks to guarantee security for investors and stakeholders involved in the industry.

“Because it’s quite a significant industry. It can generate a lot of income.

“But the key thing, I think, for the people that invest in that industry, is the security. So this is something that we will need to be very careful of when we proceed.”

Mr Kamikamica said this approach underscored the Government’s commitment to balancing economic opportunities with stringent oversight.
