Laisenia Qarase Jr says his late father often spoke about the difficulties of life in prison.

The son of former prime minister Laisenia Qarase said during an interview with this newspaper that they would remember Voreqe Bainimarama and Sitiveni Qiliho’s families during this difficult time.

“In terms of Mr Bainimarama and Mr Qiliho being in prison, it is always a difficult time for any family when a family member is incarcerated,” Mr Qarase Jr said.

“But we pray for them during this difficult time.

“I still remember my dad when he visited us in America after he was in prison. He spoke about the difficulties of life in prison.

“Your rights are thrown out the window, waking up and sleeping and your eating is decided by another person.

“And it is very difficult, so my prayers really go out to them and to their families during this difficult time that they are going through.”

Mr Qarase commended the Coalition Government for taking the courage to stand in the last elections.

“In my view, it was impossible to defeat the FijiFirst government because they had absolute power during their reign.

“But since they lost that election, I believe the hand of God intervened and heard the prayers of the people of Fiji.

“So, I commend those who stood, especially The People’s Alliance party, SODELPA and the National Federation Party and those who were able to win and give us true democracy as it is right now.”
