Lau Provincial Council chairman Ratu Meli Saubulinayau said the council is on a mission to gather and assist Lauans living on Viti Levu, especially street-dwellers.

Speaking at the Lau Provincial Council meeting this week, Mr Saubulinayau said there are 90 per cent of Lauans who are residing on Viti Levu, and the first aim is to gather information about them.

“Rather than leaving them on the streets, we will try and get them to a home or something, and look after, generally, the people of Lau, ” Mr Saubulinayau said.

“What we are trying to do now is for each district to gather information about those people and we try and assist them.

“The possibility of taking them back to Lau is there because we have boats going almost every week.

“But to get to Lau is a different story. Human rights and all is in place.

“They have to be willing to go.”

With the current drug issues that have transpired in the communities, he hopes that on the next budget, more is given to the people.

“Now that the drugs are coming in, more and more of our people are out there on the street at night and during the day,” he added.

“I hope more is given to the people. We go outside and we can see the effect and the hardship of our people.

“If we don’t help them, who will?”
