The 2024 Fiji National Rapid Chess Championship is shaping up to be a highly competitive event, with top players such as FIDE arena candidate master Prashil Prakash, Rudr Prasad, and Yash Krishen Maharaj set to battle it out for the national title.

General secretary Goru Arvind has announced that the championship will consist of nine rounds, with each game lasting 20 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move.

“Defending champion Maharaj is expected to be a strong contender, having shown consistency over the past two years,” Goru said.

In the women’s division, players such as Gloria Sukhu, Tanvi Prasad, and Cydel Terubea will be competing for the title, along with Latileta Masau and Makayla Sukhu.

The under-20 and under-14 divisions will also feature promising young talents like Yajas Sharma and Lionel Vaurasi.

Goru’s team recently took part in the 2024 FASANOC Olympic Fun Day to promote chess in Fiji and attract new members.

“Our team also managed to participate in the 2024 FASANOC Olympic Fun Day to showcase chess, candidate master (CM) Taione Sikivou, and arena candidate master (ACM) Prashil Prakash led our team of volunteers to introduce the sport to members of the public, and hopefully, further the joy of chess in Fiji.”

The championship will take place over two days starting at 8.30am on Saturday at the University of Fiji campus in Saweni, Lautoka.
