LA Rochelle’s Fijian centre, Simeli Daunivucu, has been selected to be part of the France XV team for their South American tour next month.

Simeli is the son of former national 7s representative, Jone Daunivucu, known as the ‘Yasawa Flyer’ on the rugby field. Jone moved to France in 2006 to play for Tarbes and later spent several seasons with Grenoble before returning to Cog in 2022.

Rugbyrama reported, “Daunivucu, a young 19-year-old centre from La Rochelle, is the surprise of the list”.

The young centre’s arrival has surprised the head of the French XV, Fabien Galthié, who is known for giving chances to players he respects.

“This time, the Blues coach pulled a new UFO out of his hat. Daunivucu is one of 42 players called up to participate in the summer tour. The centre of Stade Rochelais will therefore take his first steps with Fabien Galthié’s men,” Rugbyrama stated.

The Blues will play three matches there from July 6 to July 13. Daunivucu made his professional debut just five months ago.

In December, the young centre played his first match with Stade Rochelais, coming on for the last 15 minutes against Stade Français. The following week, he started the match against Section Paloise as number 12.

This season, Daunivucu has played in eight matches for La Rochelle, earning three starts.

Ronan O’Gara showed confidence in the young centre, and Daunivucu scored his first professional try against Oyonnax on the 20th day of the championship.

Considered very advanced for his age, he managed to secure a spot in the Maritimes squad and catch the eye of the national coach.

Daunivucu has also made an appearance with the French U20 team during the last Six Nations Tournament. Under-20 manager Sébastien Calvet gave him a chance against Scotland, where Daunivucu came into play around the 60th minute, helping the Bleuets secure a 29-14 victory.

Additionally, the original Fijian was part of the U18 tour in South Africa last summer.

The young centre’s inclusion in the France XV team for the South American tour marks a significant milestone in his budding career, promising an exciting future ahead. || Simeli Daunivucu || Simeli Daunivucu
