There are plans to eradicate all unapproved varieties of sugarcane by 2026.

The Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima revealed this while stating the plans of the Government and Fiji Sugar Corporation for the sugarcane sector.

“There are also plans of upgrading of factories to improve mill efficiency,” he said.

Mr Rainima said upgrading of railways to Wainikoro and Daku was also on the pipeline.

“This is to assist farmers and will also increase production.”

He said these were some of the things he would discuss with farmers during their visits to cane belt areas.

“We will want to continue to discuss with you when we come around and hopefully we can improve them together.

“We are planning to visit the Labasa cane belt areas at an early stage this year, while you are still harvesting cane.”

He said they would talk to farmers to gather more support for the improvement of their efforts to move the northern sugar industry forward.

“This will be a joint effort and we expect more participation and support from everyone involved.”

He said they were hoping to have more positive collaboration with farmers which they hoped to bring in the right results for farmers.
