A PASSENGER on a Fiji Airways flight to San Francisco died over the weekend.

The airline said a 41-year-old American man had a medical emergency about an hour and a half before flight FJ870 from Nadi was due to land at San Francisco International Airport on Sunday morning.

“Despite the best efforts of our cabin crew and a doctor on board, who provided immediate assistance, the passenger unfortunately passed away,” the airline stated  in a media release.

The plane landed safely in San Francisco about 2.34pm after the crew declared a medical emergency and received priority landing.

Fiji Airways staff members and local authorities met the plane upon arrival.

“We commend our cabin crew and the assisting doctor for their swift and professional response to this emergency,” the airline’s statement read.

Fiji Airways also offered their condolences to the passenger’s friends and family.
