The Special Emoluments Committee has recommended that constituency allowance for each Member of Parliament be increased from the current $10,000 to $15,000.
Independent consultant for the committee, Kevin Deveaux, had recommended to the committee that the constituency allowance for each MP should be incorporated into the Parliamentary Remuneration Act (2014) Act and increased to $15,000 per year.
“The current practice of approving such an allowance by way of a motion in Parliament should end,” Mr Deveaux stated.
“The allowance should not be adjusted, but should be included as part of the allowances for MPs under the Schedule to the Act.”
“In addition, the allowance should be increased to $15,000/year, reflecting increased costs.”
