The Ba women’s football team emerged victorious in the Digicel Fiji Women’s Inter-District Championship final, dedicating their win to the late Mereti Tiko, a former player of the team who was recently laid to rest.
The team secured a resounding 4-1 victory over defending champions Labasa in a thrilling match at the Fiji FA Academy grounds yesterday.
The game started off with Labasa showing solid form in the first half, with Narieta Leba scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute, taking the lead 1-0 into halftime.
However, Ba turned the tables in the second half, displaying dominance with goals from Cema Nasau, Elesi Tabunase, and Luisa Tamanitoakula.
Head coach Sharline Lockington expressed that the team’s motivation was fuelled by their desire to take the trophy back home in honor of their fallen teammate.
“We all were wearing a black ribbon as a symbol of respect, we dedicated our win to her and her family, who were in our hearts throughout the match,” said Lockington.
