More than 80 golfers gathered yesterday at the Fiji Golf Club in Suva where they participated in the Individual Stableford Points competition.
The tournament, sponsored by Hahia Investment, started at 8am and featured a male and female division.
Fiji Golf Club sponsorship chairman Mohammed Buksh said the large turnout of golfers at the tournament yesterday was a good sign for the club.
“It’s good to see a lot of golfers come out here today and we’re lucky to have great weather here,” he said.
The tournament was brought to hold at 1pm and resumed at 4pm to allow participants to head down to the HFC Bank Stadium to witness the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua clash against the Queensland Reds.
“We will also be having a break in the afternoon so those who want to watch the Drua game at the stadium can go.
“Once they’re done from the stadium, they’ll head back here to the golf course and continue with the tournament.”
He also said they were pleased to see the rise in the number of female golfers, which shows the development of golf in the country.
“We have a lot of female golfers coming in lately, so it’s good to see that there is still a lot of interest in the sport.”
The recent rise in the number of women taking part in golf has been praised by tournament organisers and this is something they hope will continue in future events.
While winning is not the primary aim, spreading the sport of golf as much as possible have seen more participants join golf events week in week out. If anything, this is a testament of how rapidly interest in the sport is growing.
