FORMER speaker of parliament Pita Nacuva believes Fiji should set up a chancery for the Indian government in the country as a gift.

The plan to set up a chancery was shelved in 2019, however, Mr Nacuva says it is time to revisit these discussions.

He said the chancery would be Fiji’s way of acknowledging the significant contribution of the Indian people to the country’s development.

“One of the things the Government of the day should consider is that the Republic of India had given a piece of property in New Delhi to build the Fiji High Commission to India,” said Mr Nacuva.

He said the Indian High Commission has maintained its commitment to the country because of their ancestral ties.

“This is the time for every one of the other ethnicities in Fiji to donate, and I am willing to donate $1000 to establish their chancery.

“I am hoping one thousand people can come on board, or even two thousand.

“To think of their (Girmitya) ancestors’ journey to the country, the struggles, and the big sacrifices, it’s amazing.

“For me, this is good timing to present them with such a gift.”

Mr Nacuva is hoping the Government of the day will also commit to the cause.

The Indian High Commission office is currently situated on level 7 of the Life Insurance Corporation of India building at Butt St, Suva.
