The review of the 2011 National Housing Policy is pivotal towards Fiji’s goal of building a stronger, resilient housing system that ensures access to safe and affordable housing for all.

Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa made the statement at the recent 2011 National Housing Policy review consultations in Pacific Habour.

Last month, Cabinet approved the review of the policy to address evolving housing needs and improve the policy’s effectiveness.

Mr Nalumisa said the objective of the workshop included identifying strategic opportunities and recommended areas of priority.

“This consultation provides an important opportunity for us to discuss the challenges, issues, gaps and recommendations for possible solutions,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“Your input into the process is valued and essential and will contribute to explore high level policy direction, identify the range of policy issues and opportunities that will serve the people.

“I am earmarking the review of this policy to be finalised by July of this year.”

He said the Government’s role in housing is to regulate the housing market and encourage the provision of goods and services and provide housing assistance to lower income households.

Mr Nalumisa thanked New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for providing them with housing advisor, Keith Hornby, who had been instrumental in the review of the policy.
