Fiji’s total population may exceed 1 million by 2050, which would mean 75,000 new homes required over the next 25 years.
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade housing advisor Keith Hornby told the 2011 National Housing Policy workshop in Pacific Harbour this week this development was to cater for the growing demand in urban areas.
According to the 2017 Fiji Population and Housing Census, Fiji has a total population of 884,887 with 57 per cent located in urban areas and 43 per cent in rural areas.
Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa said that to cater for current and future demands for housing, the ministry would have to work with stakeholders and housing agencies.
“The housing sector is demand-driven,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“It is very important that when you foresee this growth and demand, we the Government and ministry, we organise every resource that we have to be able to meet the increase in demand.
“So, we have to engage stakeholders, housing agencies from the formal sector and we should be able to meet the increase in demand.”
The workshop included officials from various ministries and stakeholders with discussions centred on key housing sector policy challenges, issues and gaps.
