FIJI Gas Limited has opened a new fuel station that will help cater for the large influx of LPG cars.

Stationed in Waidamudamu Rd in Nakasi, the refuelling stop will cater for vehicles travelling between the Suva-Nausori corridor.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Fiji Gas Limited chief executive officer Hans Reiher said it cost the company over $3million to set up about 20 AutoGas stations all over Fiji.

“After the Government launched its zero duty for LPG cars, there was a large influx of LPG cars, particularly for taxis and this provided a significant challenge for Fiji Gas as we only had two refuelling stations at our Suva and Lautoka terminal,” Mr Reiher said.

“This is a brand-new site. Over the last 20 years, we’ve probably invested over $3million in setting up about 20 stations. In today’s dollar, it’s anywhere between $150 to $200,000 for one installation, one pump.

“If you look at this corridor, Nausori to Suva, a lot of people travel to the airport, there’s a large population based in this corridor, so we noticed there’s a lot of taxis going up and down.

“This particular road is perfect because you’ve got to both directions and you’re not forcing drivers to fill right up to get to the next station. They can fill as they need.”

Mr Reiher said at the moment, the company’s working with Fiji Water to power a two-megawatt power station of theirs in Tavua.

“Yes, so LPG has traditionally, you cook with LPG, you make hot water and then of course you’ve got taxis, AutoGas.

“But a recent development with Fiji Water is a two-megawatt power station because they’re remote and they’re off grid.

“They look to put LPG power generation and Fiji Gas as their supplier. So, they can run their plant with LPG, and we transport that from Lautoka to their factory in Tavua.”
