Three athletes left the country yesterday to compete at the Australian Nationals Championship in Adelaide.
This was confirmed by Athletics Fiji head coach Albert Miller, who said the trio would be joined by two other national reps, Braelyn Yee and Yeshnil Karan, who were based in Australia. ”
The three athletes that left this (yesterday) morning are Waisake Tewa, Joshua Dravuni and Kesaia Boletakanakadavu,” Miller said.
“They will be joined by Braelyn Yee and Yeshnil Karan who are the only two athletes based in Australia.”
Miller said Tewa, Dravuni, Yee, and Boletakanakadavu would be competing in the 100metre and 200m events while Karan, the lone long-distance athlete of the team, would be featured in the 800m and 1500m events.
These athletes have been undergoing preparations since the Pacific Games and are now looking to compete at the upcoming Olympics qualifying events.
“The athletes will need all the high-level competitions they can get to improve their times and standings,” Miller said.
Meanwhile, he also mentioned that the upcoming Oceania Athletics Championships to be held in Suva in May is a qualifying event for the Olympics in France later this year.
“Yes, the Oceania event is also a qualifying event for the Olympics.
“The Oceania Championships will be pretty much one of the last opportunities the athletes will have to try and qualify for the Olympics.”
