A full damage assessment of recent flooding in the Western Division has yet to be done, says Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai.
Mr Lewaqai told The Fiji Times yesterday some places that were affected posed a challenge to his staff members.
“As of now, we have not carried out a full damage assessment,” he said.
“Usually, after our initial damage assessment, we can carry out a detailed damage assessment.
“Noting very well that to access some of the places that have been affected, it is a challenge because some of the crossing and bridges are flooded.
“And while the team is still carrying out its assessment, another heavy run affects them.”
Mr Lewaqai said the Government was working on efficient solutions to assist the people.
“As of now, the Government is working on trying to produce a quick solution to enable the movement of people and supply of basic infrastructure needs, which is the focus right now.
“So, we are not able to assess, given the weather conditions we are facing.
“Now, we note with the latest update that we are going to experience another heavy rainfall for the Northern Division.
“And that will also have an impact on the Western Division.
“When Rakiraki was flooded last Saturday, two households needed to be taken to the evacuation centres again.”
