Almost everyone gets inspired to follow their parents’ footsteps. But sometimes, as years go by, one’s true calling will overshadow other dreams. Sulueti Verewaqa is a woman who experienced this first hand.

She was brought up in a religious family that instilled in her valuable life lessons.

The 21-year-old from Qoma in Tailevu shares maternal links to Sawana, Vanuabalavu in Lau and is the younger of two siblings.

Raised in a devout Methodist household, she was part of the church choir from the age of three.

Music became a significant part of her life.

“Growing up in a strong Christian household provided a solid foundation of values and principles. That guided me through various situations,” she said.

“One of the highlights of my upbringing was my involvement in the church choir from a very young age, which instilled in me a deep love for music and community.

“However, like any other journey, there were hurdles to overcome, disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic impacted my educational pursuit, and prompted me to adapt and explore alternative paths.”

Ms Verewaqa said the hardships she faced contributed to her personal and professional growth. When she was little, she was referred to as ‘daddy’s girl’ and automatically wanted to follow her father’s footsteps in the world of accounting.

“I aspired to follow in my father’s footsteps and become an accountant, inspired by his sense of professionalism and the exposure I gained by accompanying him to CPA conferences held in hotels.

“However, as I grew older, my perspective changed.”

Her new profound interest steered Ms Verewaqa’s career aspirations towards the dynamic world of tourism and hospitality.

“My passion for travel and adventure, coupled with a desire to interact with people from diverse cultures, solidified my decision.”

Taking advantage of the expertise of ServicePro International Tourism and Hospitality Institute, Ms Verewaqa was drawn to the opportunities it presented. Upon completing her studies, she aims to secure a position within the tourism sector.

Ms Verewaqa is also eager to explore opportunities on board cruise liners.

“I also have ambitions of furthering my education to enhance my expertise and broaden my career prospects.

“By combining my passion for tourism with the dynamic environment of the airline industry, I want to play a significant role in shaping the future of global travel while fulfilling my long-term career aspirations.”

Her advice to young people seeking a similar career path is to embrace every opportunity for learning and growth.

“I encourage them to approach their work with enthusiasm, creativity and a genuine commitment to excellence,” she added.
