Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu says the ministry will look into complaints by International Women’s Association president Judy Compain on the state of bathrooms at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH).
Ms Compain took to social media to highlight her frustration about bathrooms at the hospital “deteriorating quickly with mold everywhere”.
She also questioned why pink dishwashing detergent was being used to clean the facilities instead of hospital grade detergent.
When asked, Dr Lalabalavu said he would inform the CWMH medical superintendent regarding the complaints.
He added that the ministry was relooking at the issuance of contracts to companies tasked with cleaning hospitals.
“As you’re aware, there’s been an issue about the superbug and part of the brief that I got was how works were outsourced,” he said.
“That in a way, kind of affected how things were getting done. So we are looking into that and seeing how we can improve on how we clean the hospitals; it should be done in infection prevention control measures.”
He added he understood the frustration vented by members of the public in this regard.
“As taxpayers, they are well within the boundaries to be frustrated but these are chronic issues. It’s been there for some times the government of the day took it upon itself to see these issues through.
“It is the main hospital within Fiji not only that it is a regional hospital on the referral from the region so just give us some time.”
